ERRO Grupo's Formas de Brincar
ERRO Grupo is well-known in Brazil for the multidisciplinary urban interventionism that they have been developing since 2001. The group makes street theater and urban interventions that deal with risk, violence, and peripheral performance - inserting art into daily life as a political praxis.
The 8th Encuentro of the Hemispheric Institute sought to examine the broad intersections between urban space, performance and political/artistic action in the Americas. From the critical poetics of body art to the occupation of public space by social movements, the event invited participants to explore the borders, identities and practices through which subjectivities, hegemonies and counter-hegemonies are constructed in the spaces of the city and beyond. Ways to Play (Formas de brincar) considers the aesthetic and disciplinary objectification of the human body by exploring the street as a field for an old popular game in Brazil: the Cinco Marias. In contemporary society, we succumb to the seduction of borrowed attitudes, in a kind of non-authenticity, in fragments of attitudes chosen almost unconsciously from a range of dominant stereotypes.
