"My Year as a Teacher" - Emily Sachar - Newsday and New York Newsday



Emily Sachar, an education reporter for New York Newsday, quit her job as a reporter and applied for and became a full-time teacher in the New York City school system for a year, after which she wrote a series of articles about the experience and then a book.

From Newsday's announcement April 19, 1990, p 34: Sachar won the Grand Prize for Distinguished Education Reporting for this eight-part series depicting her experience as an eighth-grade math teacher in a Flatbush, Brooklyn, junior high school." She also won first prize from the New York Press Club in the feature print category for 1990 and the Front Page award from the Newswomen's Club of New York.
